The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) kicked off with Phase One, a series of superhero films produced by Marvel Studios and based on Marvel Comics characters. These movies, all set in a shared universe, began with Iron Man in May 2008 and wrapped up with The Avengers in May 2012.
Key Characters and Movies
Each film in Phase One introduces a major superhero:
- Iron Man (2008): Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) takes center stage as Iron Man, launching the MCU.
- The Incredible Hulk (2008): Bruce Banner (played by Edward Norton) struggles with his Hulk alter ego.
- Iron Man 2 (2010): Tony Stark returns, solidifying his role as a cornerstone of the MCU.
- Thor (2011): Chris Hemsworth stars as the Norse god Thor, bringing new mythological elements.
- Captain America: The First Avenger (2011): Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) becomes Captain America, introducing a historical element.
- The Avengers (2012): All these heroes unite, though Mark Ruffalo steps in as the Hulk in place of Norton.
Behind the Scenes
Kevin Feige produced all the films, with Avi Arad and Gale Anne Hurd also involved in early projects. Initially, Marvel licensed character rights to other studios but later began producing their own movies. Following the success of Iron Man, Marvel moved forward with a plan for individual superhero films leading to a team-up in The Avengers.
Phase One Success
The six films collectively grossed over $3.8 billion worldwide and received positive feedback from audiences and critics alike. Alongside the movies, Marvel Studios created three short films—The Consultant, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer, and Item 47—along with tie-in comic books and games to expand the universe further.
